Generic Industry Promotion - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost to participate in a Generic promotion?
Generic promotions are highly subsidized. Companies pay less than half the normal cost of participating alone. Reverse missions and product showcases range from $50-100. Trade missions and shows pertain to events overseas; the cost of participation is usually around $500-1,000.

Why should I participate?
Generic activities like trade missions and reverse trade missions offer a unique way to determine the possible success in a foreign market. You will meet foreign buyers face-to-face and have the opportunity to distribute samples of your products.

How much does the country-specific market research completed under the Generic Program cost?
The market research is free. You can access it by signing in to our website. You will have to create a profile in our system if you do not already have one.

Can I participate in a Generic promotion if I am in the Branded program or the Minority Export Training (MET) Program?
Yes. Both Branded and MET participants are encouraged to participate. For Branded companies, the Generic program offers an additional way to cut cost. For MET companies, the program can help you decide which countries to focus on in your international marketing plan.

What types of products are eligible?
Eligible products include food and non-food agricultural products, beverages, seafood, agriculture-based food supplements, ornamental horticulture, certain wood products and pet foods. Products must be at least 50% U.S. agricultural origin by weight, exclusive of added water and packaging.
