In March 2008, the Southern Originals pavilion at the Alimentaria trade show in Barcelona featured four U.S. exhibitors and products from an additional seven companies. The pavilion was organized by the Southern U.S. Trade Association (SUSTA) as a Market Access Program Generic promotion. Companies from California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, Texas and Virginia showcased products in the pavilion, where a chef prepared dishes for visitors to sample.
Participating companies reported sales of $700,000 as a result of the activity, with an additional $2 million expected in the future. One participant, looking for a representative in Spain, found six interested distributors for their product, as well as several for Portugal. In total, 76 buyer-seller introductions were made at the Southern Originals pavilion.
The Alimentaria show is the Iberian Peninsula's most important trade event, attracting exhibitors and buyers from Europe, North Africa, Mexico and South America. The Alimentaria show welcomed nearly 158,000 international trade professionals during its three days. Other upcoming event listings can be found at www.susta.org/events.
